However, instead of long-term consequences for the MCU, Avengers: Age of Ultron was a self-contained Avengers mission that did not really matter much compared to future movies like Captain America: Civil War. Marvel could still not use the X-Men or the Fantastic Four back then, which would already reduce the scope of its version of Age of Ultron, but there was a lot of potential for Ultron as an Avengers villain. As such, by using the “ Age of Ultron” title, 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron promised to be a bigger and bolder story than it actually was. The Age of Ultron comic book arc deals with several characters and different timelines, and it ended with many casualties. Although the Age of Ultron comic was not as memorable as other Brian Michael Bendis’ Avengers and X-Men stories, it certainly confirmed Ultron as a character that could work as a big bad for the entire Marvel universe and not just for the Avengers. While Ultron was created in 1968, 2013 saw the release of Age of Ultron, a 10-issue series in which Ultron actually succeeded in taking over the world. Likewise, even if The Kang Dynasty cannot fully adapt comic book arcs like Kang Dynasty, it should aim at being a high-stakes story with real consequences to the heroes and to the Marvel universe instead of being just a one-off, self-contained Avengers mission that doesn’t live up to its name. Still, Age of Ultron had the potential to be much bigger than it actually was even if could not properly adapt Ultron’s best comic book stories. Age of Ultron was not the first nor the last time Marvel Studios loosely adapted a Marvel comic while reusing the name of it.
